IOBA 25th Anniversary Badge

Above you we see the artwork drawn up by Steve Humphries, from an idea that he and Steve Paris had last year to celebrate the 25th Anniversary. The badge has been 'updated' from the original 1983 badge, designed when the IOBA was formed.
At this year’s reunion, all attending IOBA members and former staff received this special commemorative memento celebrating our 25th Anniversary. We sincerely hope you like it and will wear it with pride.
Additional badges will be available to purchase through the IOBA ‘online shop’ at £3 + p&p.
The presentation of the Indefatigable Cup & Award to Sea Cadet Corp Unit: TS Pytchley.
Presented in 2008 by the Indefatigable Old Boys Association, the TS Indefatigable Cup is awarded annually, along with a monetary award, to the Sea Cadet Unit in the UK, deemed by the Sea Cadet Corps Headquarters in London, to have made the most significant improvement over the preceding twelve months.
The Cup, formally known as the ‘Navy League Challenge Swimming Trophy’, is a large silver cup, with an enamelled portrait of Lord Horatio Nelson. The Cup was competed for an annual boat race on the Mersey between The Indefatigable and the Lancashire and National Sea Training Home. It was won and given to Indefatigable in 1938, by the Navy League.
The Cadets & Staff at SCC Unit - TS Pychley, put on a wonderful event for us, and it was very deserving for TS Pytchley to win the, TS Indefatigable Cup for the most significant improved Unit in the UK, for 2007.

IOBA members invited to 'Cover' major parade in Devon
Photos from the day:
Thanks to all those that attended!
---------------------------------------
To all IOBA Contacts: Particularly those of you who live in the UK - West Country;
We have been asked to invite you to the following event:
T.S Canonteign - Teign Valley Unit 609, Sea Cadet Corps wish to invite 'Indefatigable OB's & Staff' to "cover" a major parade of the Devon District Corps/RNR which includes Officers and ratings of the regular Royal Navy.
On Sunday 20/April/2008 commencing at 14.00hrs. (Note: We're still waiting for final confirmation).
---------------------------------------
Basically they have re-branded the SCC Unit down in Teignmouth to cover the Teign Valley which is covered by Teignbridge District Council, and part of this re-branding will be the "Laying-up" of the old units "Colour".
VIP'S include the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Devon, Lord and Lady Clifford as high Sheriff of Devon, 10th Viscount Lord Exmouth the new unit Patron and direct descendant of Admiral Pellew.
Due to the shared link through the "Indefatigable" and the 1 st Viscount Exmouth of Canonteign (Admiral Pellew), it would be an honour of arranging members of our association to attend and parade our standard with them, it's hoped be the start of a longstanding relationship between the two organisations.
They had incidentally wanted to call the Unit, TS Indefatigable after Admiral Pellew's favourite ship, after when he commanded the South West approaches frigate squadron during the Napoleonic war, incidentally used by C.S. Forrester in the Hornblower series of books, films and TV dramas, but it was during this research into Pellew that they discovered our association (The IOBA), this made them look at alternative names to use, hence the name now to be called 'T.S Canonteign - Teign Valley'.
If you can let me know if you would like to attend this event, that would be helpful, so that I can pass on numbers to Nicholas Maylam Chairman of trustees of T.S Canonteign.
Please forward this e-mail to anyone you know within the Indefatigable ring, that you may know will be interested in this.
Best regards,
Steve Humphries No88 Rodney 75/76.

Update 04 July 2007
RYE AND DISTRICT SEA CADETS WIN FIRST INDEFATIGABLE TROPHY
(Editorial from Rye & District Sea Cadet Website)
"On Friday 25th May Colonel William O’Leary, Chairman of the Indefatigable Old Boys’ Association travelled from Oxford to Rye to make a very special presentation.
The Southern Area unit was selected as the Most Improved Sea Cadet Unit in the United Kingdom in 2006 and was the first recipient of the solid silver Indefatigable Trophy.
The trophy, once the Royal Navy Swimming Cup, is so valuable it has to remain in the old T.S Indefatigable College in Anglesey and the winning units receive a shield to keep.
The college closed in 1995 but is now a joint services training establishment for outdoor activities, including adventure training.
The Indefatigable Old Boys Association decided to present the trophy annually to the Sea Cadet Corps and Col O’Leary presented it to Lt (SCC) David Spicer RNR, Commanding Officer of T.S.Rye.
Several members of the Old Boys attended the ceremony, along with Mrs Jack Gore, Deputy Lieutenant of East Sussex, local Mayors, members of the Royal Naval Association and the Royal British Legion. Southern Area Sea Cadets were represented by the Deputy Area Officer, Major Andy Henderson RM and Area Chairman Chris Ledger.
After a short ceremony the guests were entertained to a sumptuous buffet provided by the staff at T.S. Rye.

Update July 2006
New Chairman
BILL O'LEARY 74/76 - Colonel WJ O'Leary TD
Bill's background: In a civilian capacity, Bill is the Business Development Manager for an international automotive supplier, specialising in plastics. In his second career he is a Colonel in the Territorial Army, currently holding the post of Colonel Territorial Army Recruiting. Prior to taking up this post, he was the TA Colonel in Land Command, which commands the JSMTC Indefatigable. Through this link, and with a little 'command pressure' he has been able to move a little way back towards the good old days, of holding AGM events within the school grounds. With a bit of sensitivity and by taking things one step at a time, maybe in the not too distant future we will be able to have our dinner there as well? Bill is currently the Chairman of both Territorial Army Golf, and Territorial Army Shooting, and also Chairman of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Golf Association. Additionally, sits on the Oxfordshire Reserve Forces and Cadets Association as a Military Member and involved heavily with the cadet youth movements.
The INDEFATIGABLE AWARD 2006
As an outcome from this years AGM, we will be making an annual donation to the Sea Cadet Corps (£700 to date). This year £600 will be forwarded direct from IOBA funds, along with another £100 very generously (privately) given. It's hoped to aim between £500 - £1000 year on year to the Sea Cadet Unit deemed by the Sea Cadet Corps HQ, to have made the most significant improvement over the previous 12 months (NATIONALLY) . Additionally, we will award one of our cups 'The Navy League Challenge Swimming Trophy' to the winning unit, but this is to be still held centrally at JSMTC (The Old School), and can be used by the winning unit for such events that warrant it, such as dinner nights.
'The INDE' Book for Sale
You may be interested to know that we have had recently had a book written all about the Indefatigable, from 1864 - 1995. The Founding Fathers of INDEFATIGABLE asked the question "What is to be done about the many orphans whose only crime was that they were sons of seamen?" So in 1864 the Inde was set up for "the training of orphans and boys in poor circumstances." That was a typical Liverpool response . . . 'The Inde Way, get stuck in, and get it done!' With much change, from ship to shore, the School continued until 1995 with its self-appointed task of 'turning boys into men'. This is a fantastic story. Bob Evans has added yet another piece into the proud maritime history of Liverpool.
This is for all who went to, or are remotely interested in the INDEFATIGABLE.
The INDEFATIGABLE Old Boys Association is in a joint funding partnership with 'The Mersey Mission to Seafarers' Liverpool, which has taken two years to collate. Although Indefatigable has been previously included in a book entitled 'The Training Ships of Liverpool' by Bob Evans, this book is a much fuller account of the Ships / School and us. This is our story, there has never been a book exclusively on INDEFATIGABLE and there never will be again. The book is dedicated to all Indefatigable Old Boy's - and Staff.

Indefatigable IOBA
Currently our membership stands at around 305 members (as of 06/2007). Alas this still doesn't reflect the amount of us that has passed through the School prior to its closure. Personally we would love to see the membership increase if not for the association itself, for the numerous amount of letters and emails that we receive re. the whereabouts of old mates. We're to increase membership and keep all of us in touch with one another via whatever communications are at our disposal. We would like as many Old Boys to have their full details put on our NEW Database so that old friends can contact one another by using our network.
Please note; Membership dues are up for 2007
Please email Tom Keyes 62/64 (IOBA Treasurer) for your subscription due dates.
Subscriptions are:
£15 to cover annual subscriptions (OAP over 65 yrs £10), or
£65 for FIVE years membership (OAP over 65yrs £45), or a 'Bankers Order'.
